How to care for your gold-plated jewelry daily
Partager
A gold-plated piece of jewelry requires a little care – not because it's fragile, but because a few simple steps are enough to keep it shiny for years instead of just a few months. The good news: for 18K gold-plated stainless steel, maintenance literally takes thirty seconds.
Daily habits that make all the difference
The biggest enemy of gold jewelry is not water or the passage of time – it's chemicals. Perfumes, creams, hairspray, shower gel: these products contain ingredients that can tarnish plating, even good quality plating. The habit to adopt: put on your jewelry last, once perfume and cream have had time to dry.
Second simple habit: remove jewelry before intense physical activity, a prolonged sea swim with a lot of sand, or sports. It's not that water damages stainless steel – on the contrary, it resists it very well – but repeated rubbing with sand or continuous sweat can, in the long run, mark any piece of jewelry.
For storage, one step is enough: avoid leaving your jewelry in a pile in a drawer where they will knock against each other. A pouch, a compartmentalized box, or even a simple saucer are enough to prevent micro-scratches that, over time, dull the shine.
Cleaning: quick and easy
No need for specialized products or silver dip. A soft, dry cloth (microfiber, like for glasses) is enough to restore shine after several days of wear. For a more thorough cleaning once a month: lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap, gently rub with your fingers or a very soft-bristled brush, rinse with clear water, and dry immediately with a cloth – the step often forgotten, but which prevents limescale water marks.
Absolutely avoid: toothpaste, baking soda, or any abrasive product sometimes circulated as a "homemade tip." On real gold plating, it wears down the gold layer instead of cleaning it.
Why stainless steel is a game-changer
All these steps apply to any gold-plated jewelry, but their importance changes completely depending on the base material. On a classic alloy (brass, copper), the slightest lapse in care can be enough to cause oxidation to appear in a few weeks. On stainless steel, the same lapse simply has no effect – it is a material that does not rust and does not oxidize, period. The advice above is therefore not there to prevent a disaster, but to maintain the shine of the gold plating for as long as possible, which is a whole other level of peace of mind.
At Zistwar Jewels, all our jewelry – like the Bracelet Bras - Corail doré, inspired by the turquoise waters of Reunion Island – is made of 18K gold-plated stainless steel, precisely so that it accompanies everyday life without the mental burden of "can I keep it on in the shower."
